Between 1995 and 2010, many companies including the team at H2Gen tried to get small scale conversion of pipeline natural gas to hydrogen to work. The problems with on-site conversion of natural gas to hydrogen include the significant challenge of maintaining hydrogen fuel quality during the automatic “turndown” and idle modes needed when local storage banks are full. Most hydrogen vehicle fueling stations these days get compressed hydrogen delivered by. tube trailers with operating pressures of 160 to 500 bar. These scenarios are not common place in the general public and take special consideration and potentially risk mitigation techniques. Some example scenarios that were considered are: What if a helicopter crashed into the hydrogen station? That would result in a mess, but no big deal. What if a helicopter comes in with weapons hot and fires into the hydrogen fueling station? That too would result in a mess, but no big deal.
